The residence of a feudal lord or of a ruler may require defesnive structures and thus turn into a fort or a castle. In contrast to a relatively upper class or modenr trend to mulitple houses, much of human history shows the importacne of multi-purpose houses. Many houses hvae sveeral rooms with specialized functions. Ideally, architects of houses design rooms to meet the needs of the people who will live in the house. More generlaly, people often build houses out of the nearest available material, and often traditoin and/or culture govern construction-materials, so whole towns, aeras, conuties or even states/countries may be biult out of one main type of material.
